ONS Review?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Heather Piwowar @ 11:22 am

To quickly flush out a conversation:

Matt Hodgkinson and I very briefly discussed whether a review (or similar) of Open Notebook Science might be interesting to BMC.  He said that because of their funding mechanism they obviously can’t publish many such things, but that since ONS is a relevant topic for them and so far primarily discussed only in informal channels, it may be appropriate, for example in BMC Bioinformatics.  Except he didn’t say it in a run-on sentence.

(Matt also pointed me to a few relevant papers by Peter Murray-Rust in BMC Bioinformatics)

Sounds like a potential opportunity!  Many things to clarify and confirm and consider, but I wanted to let the community know about the possibility.  I think that I would like to be involved, if appropriate, and could bring my work-in-progress summary to the table.  Anyone else interested?  Others who have written about ONS, or are, heh, actually DOING it???  :)

  2. Great! PB, I was hoping you’d say that! :)

I’ll have a chance to get back to the notes later this month. If you want, email me (researchremix at gmail) your email and I’ll make the Google Doc editable. Needless to say, it is barely a starting point right now….

    Any sort of thoughts welcome.

  3. This sounds like a good idea to me – the only query I would have is whether it might be a bit early. Are there enough people out there working up various open notebooks that in six months there may be more examples? Or perhaps the writing of such a review would encourage people to get more out there?

Another thought was that perhaps it might also be good to see what else people are thinking of publishing in the area over the next 12 months? Maybe there is an argument for coordination? We are working towards submitting a paper detailing our e-notebook system (http://chemtools.chem.soton.ac.uk/projects/blog/blogs.php/blog_id/13) and its rationale and problems, hopefully to PLoS Biology, sometime over the next six months.
